West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that the schools, colleges, and universities in the state will remain closed until August 31, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the state. The Chief Minister was addressing a press conference at the secretariat where the announcement was made. In the conference, she also stated that a meeting will be conducted by the end of August to decide the future course of action with regard to reopening the schools and colleges in the state. The chief minister mentioned that in case the situation improves in the month of August then the government will think about reopening the schools on September 5, 2020, which is also observed as Teacher’s Day and continue the classes until Durga Puja. She also pointed out that if everything works according to the plans made, the educational institutions will re-open with classes conducted on alternate days only. All this however will completely depend on the COVID-19 situation in the state and the final decision will be taken by the state government thereafter. The State Chief Minister has also urged the Prime Minister to withdraw the revised UGC guidelines which were issued on July 6, 2020, which asks colleges and universities to conduct the Final Semester examinations by the end of September 2020. The Chief Minister questioned the possibility of conducting the exams as the educational institutions remain closed due to the pandemic. She stated that conducting the exams will increase the risk of students from getting infected with the disease which is why the request has been made to take up the matter with the HRD Ministry and stick to the guidelines which were issued by the UGC in April 2020 n so that students will not face any problem.
